“Goodbye” Letter
Dear Ms. Schwartz,
This digital portfolio is showcasing my best writings, and also my favorite writings. I have composed this letter to the reader after reviewing my reflections in English about my writings, and rereading my actual writing pieces. I have learned a lot about how I write this year, and I have seen myself developing in my writing skills.
In the beginning of the year, I had some trouble with brainstorming ideas, because I am used to just taking out a piece of paper and writing and formulating my ideas as I went. However, in this year’s English class, we did a lot of essays where we underwent the writing process. I found that when I brainstorm, then organize, and then start writing, I can express my ideas with more clarity than when I would just start out writing. I think that I have improved in this area of my writing.
My writing has also improved because I have been using less linking verbs, which can constrict the meaning of my writing and make it very plain. When I use action verbs, my writing can be more interesting and less tedious for the reader to read.
Another problem that I have is being too wordy. I know that I can be quite wordy when I write, especially in formal essays. It can sometimes get in the way of the true meaning of the writing. Even though I have been working on this, I don’t feel I have improved much in this area. I need to work on being more concise, but it’s not too big a problem, in my opinion.
As for my strengths in writing, I feel my strongest writing ability is to organize it and make it easy to read. I feel I write best in a formal setting, such as essays or assignments with a strict rubric. I find that all of my formal essays are consistently structured well and are easy to read because they flow evenly
I enjoy creative writing as well, but I find that they are harder to write than the analysis or research essays. Poems are fun to write, but because there is no set of rules for creative poetry, I find myself at a loss of where to begin. However, when I make myself a guide to write my poem by, my poems come out neat and creative.
Overall, I think I have improved as a writer this year, just like a bud blooms into a beautiful flower. However, I still have a lot of work to do. So I look forward to AP English class next year, where I can continue to work on my writing!
Love,
Sarah
